Shattered
The Early Years

As I walked in the darkness of nightmares,
I hammered verse out of shadows
And it seemed a balm,
But it never failed to burn me
With false hopes and false glory,
And tears from an untold story.
Cruelly, my words were my prison
And my unfulfilled hope.
Every door seemed a portal to heaven.
And yet, with a moment's careful thought-
Why do my hands pound vainly
Against a barrier supposed to give way,
But for the sake of some cosmic joke,
Never yielding to my plea?
And so I find I have failed once again
To find a truth that calms my soul,
And I am flung back into darkness:
A confusion in which every moment is the same,
And every moment is pain.
Always, with each step toward heaven's hope
Comes the falling back again.
