Reaching You
I've been watching you for hours
Wondering if you know
How much your spirit loves the earth
And all the things that grow.
I want to share the joy
Of sailing, of running, of climbing a tree,
Of kneeling on the earth in prayer.
I want to share the joy
Of lying under a sweet-smelling pine
In the summertime
And watching the sky.
But I cannot.
I can do nothing.
I cannot teach you.
I cannot open your eyes.
I cannot change your mind.
You must walk barefoot through the forest,
You must stand on a windy ledge,
You must walk among the redwoods,
And dive into the ocean.
Then you shall knows the little wisdom that I have,
And the depth of your own soul.
