Group Roles
Harmonizer: Agrees with group, reconciles opposing positions, understands, complies, accepts, is non-aggresive.
Encourager: Builds others' confidence, if friendly, responsive, warm, diplomatic.
Clarifier: Restates an issue or solution for clarification, summarizes after discussion, introduces new member to group by bringing her up to date.
Initiator: Suggests procedures, problems, or discussion topics, proposes alternative solutions, is idea person.
Energizer: Urges group towards decision-making, insists on covering agenda, prods to action.
Questioner: Asks questions, seeks orientation or clarification, asks for information or repetition for sake of self or group, is a constructive critic of group or members.
Listener: Maintains participatory attitude and interest, while talking little or not at all, shows interest by facial and body expression.
Tension Reducer: Helps group by joking or clowning at appropriate times.
Opinion Giver: States a belief or opinion on some problem or issue, gives own experience to illustrate point.
Dominator: Interrupts, embarks on long monologues, is over-positive and over-dogmatic, tries to lead group, asserts authority, is autocratic.
Negativist: Rejects ideas, takes negative attitudes on most issues, argues unduly, is pessimistic, refuses to cooperate.
Deserter: Withdraws in some way, is indifferent, aloof, excessively formal, daydreams, doodles, whispers to others, wanders from subject or talks about own experiences when unrelated to discussion of group.
Agressor: Struggles for status, boasts, critisizes or blames others, tries to get attention, shows hositility towards group or a certain individual, deflates ego or status of others.
