Your God

You say, "All is God's will,
And our truth is the only truth.
You must follow us, or God will hurt you."
But you are seventeen
And you have only seen one world.
Instead of searching for others,
Have you ever asked yourself, who is God?
Have you ever gazed into your own soul
And wondered?
Have you ever surrendered to the beauty
Of the living world,
And let yourself be drawn away by its current?
Can you feel joy?
Not the empty joy of a badly sung hymn
In a sterile church on Sunday,
But the joy of sea-spray on your face
And your hand on the shivering forestay,
With the wind of the world
Sweeping you over the ocean?
Or the joy of a new rainbow,
Flung across the damp gray sky?
Or the joy of bare feet in soft green grass
On the prairie, where there is such pure love
That no walls can withstand it?

If you must give a name to God,
Let him be deep rivers
And golden sunsets;
See him in ancient trees
And young saplings;
Let him be the voices of birds
And the falling of water.
Let him be all the love in the world,
The beautiful world.
